چکیده
Local anaesthetic drugs are used widely for the provision of anaesthesia and analgesia both intraand post-operatively. Understanding the pharmacology of these agents as a group, as well as the differences between specific drugs, enables the anaesthetist to use them safely to maximum effect. This tutorial focuses on the basic structure and function of local anaesthetics. Learning will be improved by trying to answer the questions posed in the text before moving on. More detail can be found in the “Further reading” section at the end.

A NEW BIOLOGICAL SCREENING SYSTEM FOR LOCAL ANAESTHETICS BY INHIBITION MOBILITY OF TETRAHYMENA PYRIFORMIS
An alternative in vitro approach to drug screening has been the use of human cell cultures for antiviral agents and microbial cell cultures for the assessment of the carcinogenic potential of selected compounds. A number of protozoan species have been also used as drug screens for anti-protozoal agents. The ciliated protozoan Tetrahymena pyriformis species has been widely utilised as a dru...
متن کاملPHARMACOLOGICAL STUDIES ON NOVEL BASIC AMINOALKYL ARYL ETHERS AS POTENTIAL LOCAL ANAESTHETICS
Following our previous investigations on certain new aminoalkyl aryl ethers, which showed promising and outstanding local anaesthetic properties, the local anaesthetic activity and duration of action of a further selection of four novel derivatives of the above-mentioned series, used as hydrochloride salts, have been determined by the ill vivo rat sciatic nerve test. These are: N,N-dimethyl...
متن کاملEffect of some beta-adrenoceptor blockers and of (+) propranolol on adrenaline-induced pulmonary edema in mice.
(+) Propranolol is considered to prevent adrenaline-induced pulmonary edema (A.P.E.) due to the beta-adrenoceptor blockade. However, local anaesthetics also are known to prevent pulmonary edema. To assess the role of beta-adrenergic blockade in A.P.E., the effect of a beta 1-blocker possessing local anaesthetic action (+/- Metaprolol) and a beta 1-blocker possessing no local anaesthetic action ...
متن کاملAspects of the pharmacology of local anaesthetic agents.
The use of local anaesthetic techniques varies with the anaesthetist's working conditions, direction of interest, and hence geographically. Thus they are mainly used in certain centres in America and Canada, and in the Scandinavian countries. Interest in, and use of, local anaesthesia has increased during the last decade. There are many reasons for this. The use of these techniques enables the ...
